In 2022 a national assessment was carried out, which was commissioned by the Flemish government, to assess the extent to which students have achieved the attainment targets for Dutch (reading, listening and writing) at the end of the first grade of secondary education. Data were collected through two digital tests for reading and listening. In addition, a digital practical test was administered to assess students' writing skills. A representative sample of 1520 students from the A-stream and 4048 students from the B-stream participated. Tests were supplemented with background questionnaires for students, parents, teachers, and the coordinator of the didactic team for Dutch. The questionnaires collected, among other things, information on general background characteristics of the students and their families, characteristics of the teachers and the Dutch language curriculum. The response rates to the student questionnaire were 95% for the A-stream and 84% for the B-stream. For the parent questionnaire, the response rates were 91% and 71%, respectively. For the teacher questionnaires, the response rates were 87% and 73%, respectively. For the coordinators of the didactic teams, the response rates were 72% and 63%, respectively.
