A cyanobacterial strain was isolated from the red macroalga Agarophyton vermiculophyllum. Based on morphological characters and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA gene, this strain was recognized as a novel species which is best accommodated in a new genus. In addition to providing a description for the new organism the aims this study were to assemble a draft genome for these strains to investigate the potential functional role of this organism in the symbiosis with the wide spread invasive seaweed A. vermiculophyllum.
