Scanned images of 353 wood cores. Supplement 1 (https://doi.org/10.25573/data.22806797) provides metadata including the Latin binomial or species name associated with the file name of each image. Joe Wright and colleagues collected the wood cores with 5-mm diameter increment borers at sites within approximately 10 km of Barro Colorado Island in central Panama. Each core was broken into segments approximately 5 cm long. Peter Hietz and colleagues sanded and polished the outermost segment perpendicular to the grain to produce cross sections or transverse planes. Larger xylem vessels are visible (smaller vessels might be filled with dust). Growth ring borders, and rays are also visible in many images. The source reference follows: Hietz, P. 2024.
