High melt rates on temperate mountain glaciers tend to cause frequent redistribution of cryoconite and increase the export of microbes from cryoconite holes to other supraglacial habitats and also the proglacial zones. However, the role of cryoconite holes serve as sources of microbes for other supraglacial habitats is not currently well understood. To explore the contribution of cryoconite hole-originating taxa to bacterial diversity in other supraglacial habitats, we collected samples of cryoconite sediment and overlying water within cryoconite holes and supraglacial cryoconite mounds from three Tibetan glaciers.
