NRS-19201 | Register of Occupation License [Tumut Lands Office]

This register contains a summary record of all Occupation Licenses in the Land District of Tumut, kept by the Tumut Lands Office.Occupation Licenses were licenses to occupy Crown Lands, created by the Crown Land Act of 1884. The license was on a yearly basis, renewable annually on payment of the license fee. The land may be used for grazing only. Land held under occupation license consisted mostly of the resumed areas of pastoral holdings divided by the Act of 1884. The resumed and leasehold areas retained the name of the original run or pastoral holding. For record purposes the Occupation License was allotted a number, the same number with the letter ‘A’ affixed being used to record the Preferential Occupation License attached to the same pastoral holding. Under an amending Act in 1896, land held under occupation license could be withdrawn from the holder on receipt of an application for such land as a homestead selection. Government Gazette for 1st October 1895 stated that all Occupation Licenses were to be paid in advance from the year 1896 onwards.The register records information such as the name and number of the Occupation License, the name and address of licensee or transferee and the date of transfer.
