In Ethiopia, E. ventricosum is arguably the most important indigenous crop contributing for food security and rural livelihoods for over a quarter of the country’s population. Mainly produced for human food derived from starch-rich psudostems and underground corm, the enset plant is also nutritious animal fodder source. The crop is highly drought tolerant with broad agro-ecological distribution and cultivated solely with household-produced inputs; hence, it bears an immense potential suited for small-scale low-external-input and organic farming systems in the changing climates.
