COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF STYLISTIC TERMS IN UZBEK AND ENGLISH DICTIONARIES

Linguistic features of stylistic terms in Uzbek and English dictionaries represent one of the most significant areas of modern comparative lexicography and stylistics, as they reflect not only the internal structure of languages but also their functional and cultural usage in communication. Stylistic terms in dictionaries serve as metalinguistic indicators that guide users in understanding the expressive, emotional, and functional properties of lexical units. In both Uzbek and English lexicographic traditions, stylistic labels such as formal, informal, colloquial, literary, archaic, slang, poetic, and technical are widely used, yet their interpretation and application differ depending on linguistic structure, historical development, and cultural context. Uzbek lexicography, influenced by Turkic linguistic traditions and Soviet lexicographic methodology, tends to emphasize functional style classification and culturally embedded expressive meanings, while English lexicography, developed within a more global and analytical linguistic framework, focuses on register variation, pragmatic usage, and contextual flexibility of stylistic labeling. The comparative analysis of these systems reveals that stylistic terms in dictionaries are not merely technical annotations but also cognitive tools that reflect how speakers perceive language variation, emotional coloring, and communicative intent.
