Fire Affected Areas in Africa

The Fire Product: Fire Affected Areas in Africa was part of the
International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme Data and Information
System (IGBP-DIS) Regional Satellite Fire Data Compilation CD-ROM.

AVHRR data have been used to map the active fire spatial and temporal
distribution all around the world. This data set is a first temporal
sample of the future Burned Area Product for Africa that will show the
burned area distribution during a ten year period.

NOAA-AVHRR-GAC-5 km is the input data used to produce the burned area
maps and consists of a daily series of images covering the whole
African continent for the period July 1981 to January 1992.

This data set presents the first Africa weekly continental product
showing areas affected by fire for the period between 8 November 1990
and 23 January 1991. It covers all the African Continent (19W to 54E,
38N to 38S) though the values presented are restricted to the burning
regions. The fire affected area pixel code corresponds to the number
of the week starting in November (e.g. 2 for the week between 8 and 14
of November). The full year data could be available under request.
