The plastid is a multi-membrane organelle common to apicomplexan parasites and whose function is yet to be completely elucidated. Several studies suggest that this organelle is involved in a variety of metabolic functions, among them, fatty acid and amino acid biosynthesis. Thus, it is considered a primary target in drug discovery. The plastid genome in Apicomplexa is approximatelly 35 kilobases in length.
