This dataset contains electrophysiological recordings of more than a thousand single units from the hippocampal subfield Cornu Ammonis 1 of 5 male Long Evans rats, obtained while the animals foraged for chocolate cereal crumbs in a 150x150 cm (squared) open field arena. The units were recorded during a total of 114 sessions—all of which lasted for at least twenty minutes or longer. The data was collected to investigate the possible occurrence of egocentric tuning in hippocampal neurons in rats. Well-trained rats were chronically implanted with drives that guided tetrode electrodes into the target brain region and local field potentials were recorded using either a AxonaLtd daqUSB or Neuralynx system; in both cases with an overhead camera tracking two LEDs on the head stage of the animal to register the 2D position of the animal. The data may be used to investigate the spatial properties of CA1 cells in the non-changing standard “open field session”.
