Lactobacillus johnsonii is a well-known colonizer of the GI tracts of humans and animals. Several health-beneficial characteristics of this species have been well investigated including, inhibition and exclusion of pathogen. L. johnsonii MR1 is an isolate from Balb/c mice cecum, that has shown to have an immunomodulatory effect. Oral gavage of this strain demonstrates airway protection in both house dust and respiratory syncytial virus mice models.
