Fill from two roasting pits at site 5RB709 in northwest Colorado were examined for
macrofloral remains. The fill from one of the roasting pits also was examined using Fourier
Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR). The site was tested as part of the Northwest Pipeline
Corporation's proposed 2006 Vernal Recoat Project. The roasting pits are associated with
Fremont occupation of the site, dating to AD 780-1030. Macrofloral analysis will be used to
provide subsistence information concerning plant resources utilized by the Fremont occupants
of the site. FTIR analysis of the roasting pit fill will examine the sediments for evidence of
proteins, lipids, and/or carbohydrates.
