Assessment of Biomedical Waste Segregation Practices in the Operation Theatre

Biomedical waste generated in the operation theatre includes anatomical waste, blood-soiled materials, contaminated plastics, sharps, glassware and other potentially infectious materials. Incorrect segregation at the point of generation can increase the risk of needle-stick injuries, occupational exposure, environmental contamination and healthcare-associated infections. Correct segregation is therefore an important component of infection prevention and occupational safety. WHO recommends segregation as close as possible to the point where waste is generated, while Indian healthcare facilities are required to follow the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules and applicable CPCB guidance.
