The design is a butterfly, as this is a bug with naturally balanced halves. There are 10 pegs on each side, making 20 altogether. Each individual wing is divided into two parts of 5, which is the same arrangement as seen on dice. This allows the teacher to choose how to use the manipulative based on student knowledge.
