Data on species composition and diversity of trees outside forests along an urban-rural gradient in Murang'a municipality, Kenya

This dataset contains raw field data collected during a study assessing the species composition and diversity of trees outside forests (TOF) along an urban–rural gradient in Murang’a Municipality, Kenya. The data were gathered through systematic sampling of tree species in different land use zones (urban, peri-urban, and rural) to evaluate spatial patterns in TOF diversity. Variables include species name, their numbers, their origin, location coordinates, land use type, tree planting configuration, method of establishment, age of the trees, projected time that the trees will be in existence, and their main uses. The dataset supports ecological analyses of biodiversity trends in fragmented landscapes and can contribute to urban forestry planning and conservation strategies. Data collection was conducted between April and July 2024, and all species were identified using standard field identification guides, or by qualified botanists.
