WalkingMaps-POI Dataset for Multimodal Generation of Leisure Walk Descriptions

This dataset was collected and curated for the Master’s thesis “Multimodal Generation of Points-of-Interest Descriptions for Leisure Walking”.It contains Points of Interest (POIs) and walking routes extracted from the WalkingMaps platform (https://walkingmaps.com.au), which focuses on leisure walking in Australia.Each POI includes:Basic information: title, latitude, longitudeUser-contributed narrative descriptionsRoute-level thematic features (e.g., nature trail, dog-friendly, art and culture)Linked photographs taken by walkersEnriched contextual information from OpenStreetMap (OSM) such as nearby amenities, leisure facilities, historic sites, and tourism featuresThe dataset comprises approximately 2,066 walking routes and 19,920 POIs.It provides multimodal data (text, spatial, and image) to support research on AI-based text generation, geographic data enrichment, and human-centered modeling of leisure walking experiences.
