Drosera capensis, the cape sundew, is a widely cultivated carnivorous plant of South African origin. D. Capensis is a potentially valuable model organism for the study of carnivory in plants, due to its ease of cultivation and relatively short maturation time. D. Capensis is also a potentially valuable source of novel proteins, including stable proteases, glycosyltransferases involved in mucilage production, and other enzymes evolved in response to this plant's unique ecological challenges. By sequencing and assembling the genome of D. Capensis, we hope to make this unusual plant more accessible to researchers worldwide.
