Gaudier, the author of this portrait, was part of a lively circle of young artitst working in London. in 1913 he sculpted this portrait of his friend, the painter Alfred Wolmark. At this time Gaudier was excited by Cubism, which is reflected in the roughness and angles of Wolmark's face in this depiction.
