Mosquitoes vector some of the most significant pathogens of humans, including the causative agents of malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus disease. We recently reported that three mosquito species reared in the laboratory require gut bacteria to develop. Here, we expand this study to include three mosquito species collected from the field: Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus. We also report substantial variation in mosquito microbial communities among local field sites and the laboratory.
