Deformation in the Earth’s crust localizes onto faults that may rupture rapidly producing earthquakes. We will develop novel experimental techniques that depend on simultaneous dynamic synchrotron X-ray microtomography imaging and acoustic emission data acquisition. The overarching goal is to develop a general model that describes the precursory stage leading to earthquake rupture. We will use a new and original rock deformation apparatus on beamline BM18, that will couple X-ray tomography imaging and acoustic emission monitoring. The principal investigator has obtained a European Research Council Advanced Grant "Break through rocks" in which ESRF is a Beneficiary. We are requesting 72 shifts on beamline BM18 for the period 2025/II-2027/I. In terms of return-on-investment for ESRF, the present proposal brings an external investment of 663 k€ and funding to hire a full-time beamline scientist who is deeply involved in the general beamline activities.
