nano emodin effect on intestinal flora of CKD

Emodin as the key therapeutic component of rhubarb has been used for decades in Chinese medicine to treat CKD. However, the compound is not readily applied due to its poor solubility and limited colonic irrigation time. To address this, we developed nanoparticles of a core-shell bi-block copolymer conjugate based on chitosan as a colon-targeted system, then loaded them with emodin and analyzed their efficacy on 5/6 nephrectomized rats. We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because we found that colonic irrigation of the emodin-nanoparticle system modified the gut microbiota, thereby attenuating the adverse kidney tubulointerstitial fibrosis and dysfunction.
