Brazilian dromedaries

This dataset was created for the analysis of the unsuccessful government-sponsored experiment to introduce and naturalize dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) in the northeastern Brazilian province of Ceará, which occurred between 1857 and 1867. The objective of this paper is to argue that the naturalization plan was tailored following the principles of animal acclimatization while aimed at wider efforts by the Brazilian government to modernize national agriculture. In practice, it meant the employment of the dromedaries as livestock and pack animals, which also sought to address the logistics problems in the region. The dataset below compiled six types of information about Burlamaque: (1) relevant references to the scheme in the Bulletin de la Société impérial; (2) references to the scheme in the Presidential Reports of the province of Ceará; (3) in Ministerial Reports of the Empire cabinet; (4) Ministerial Reports of the Agriculture cabinet; (5) in the Imperial Budget; and (6) in articles published by Guilherme Capanema in the Diario do Rio de Janeiro.
