The Hoeflea genus is a relatively newly identified genus of Alpha-proteobacteria comprising 7 species. Very little is known about their biology, but it seems that they predominantly live in association with phytoplankton. Recently, a putative novel species of Hoeflea was recovered from Baltic sea surface water. It is likely growing in association with N2-fixing bacteria and seems to be capable of autotrophic growth as well as utilization of nitrate and nitrous oxide as electron acceptors.
