Serum samples from 7 of 20 patients with active SLE, 2 of 20 with inactive SLE, and 4 of 20 with stationary SLE responded to the epitope. Adsorption experiments with various ligands were performed, and the anionic polymer dextran sulphate, anionic monomer sulphanilic acid and DNA bound the anti-sulphatide antibody.
