Phaseolus vulgaris, common bean or string bean, is an economically important species of beans and is cultivated through out the world. It is one of the most ancient crops of the world. One of the initial steps for genome sequence determination is creation of a genetic linkage map. Using parents from different gene pools allow the greatest chance of variation which can be mapped at a locus. The number of traits that can be placed on each map is limited to those traits that differ between the two parents; different parents from either gene pool would yield maps containing the location of different traits. Creation of a single map displaying the maximum number of traits requires integrating the greatest number of component maps into a single map. The goal of this project was to create a linkage map for common bean one step at a time.
