Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common cause of vaginal discharge. BV is a polymicrobial disease, yet Gardnerella vaginalis is thought to play a principal role in disease pathogenesis. Metronidazole is a front-line therapy for BV but treatment failure and recurrent disease are common. Metronidazole resistance has been observed among G. vaginalis isolates, although its clinical significance is unknown. We used the metronidazole-susceptible (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration=4 micrograms/ml) strain 14019 (American Type Culture Collection) and cultured in on increasing concentrations of metronidazole until we obtained a a highly resistant (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration > 1000 micrograms/ml) derivative. The genome sequence of this strain may be useful for investigating the molecular basis of metronidazole resistance in this species.
