Dataset for 'Promises of Lifeness in the Promotional Material of Generative AI Software for Nonplayer Characters'

This dataset contains:

(a) The document sources that were used in .txt format.

(b) A .csv export produced by OpenQDA containing the coding data.

An important thing to note is that OpenQDA (at the time of this project at least) does not allow for either exporting the raw documents used in the project or reopening the document editing stage to copy the document precisely. Therefore, I had to copy the documents as they were into a fresh .txt file. This means that (a) the character and line numbers will not align precisely with the data in the .csv, (b) images present in the original documents are not included, and (c) rich text formatting (headers, bold, italics, etc.) are also not included. This shouldn't hinder reproducability, but is a minor frustration and a caveat to be aware of. If OpenQDA allows for better text export in the future, I will consider creating a new version of this dataset.

When collecting the data, I also created an archived version of each website at the time of scraping via archive.org so that the originals can be referred to. You can find the corresponding links in the following table:
