DCMEX2 Cloud top height estimates from aircraft video

This repository is part of the Deep Convective Microphysics Experiment (DCMEX) project. Code from https://zenodo.org/records/18939170 attempts to automatically detect the top height from FAAM aircraft video during a 2022 field campaign using: Aircraft instrumentation data, such as GPS, altitude, etc Video footage from aircraft-mounted cameras. The footage was preprocessed to remove noise and separated out into frames. Information on the timings of the cloud top passes was used to catalogue frames into the relevant cloud pass groups. We then selected images that contained the sky and used OpenCV image processing tools to detect the cloud top in the image. This information, along with estimated distances from the aircraft instrument data and the cloud pass dataset, can be used in optical equations to estimate the cloud top height.This dataset is the archived results of the automated processing, containing a dataset of labelled images with estimated cloud top heights and CSV files of time series of the estimated heights calculated. These photos can be used with the standalone tools provided in the https://zenodo.org/records/18939170 repository to manually estimate cloud heights as well.
