VPRS 19345 Basin Studies Reference Files

The series is comprised of files recording bores drilled in the Murray, Gippsland and Otway basins, thought to have been compiled and used by the Basin Studies Section of the Petroleum Development Branch, Department of Natural Resources and Environment (VA 3972) in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They were also likely key references used by the Geological Survey of Victoria (VA 4118), for whom basin studies is an applied research focus.  Bore holes (otherwise known as drill or well holes) are narrow shafts drilled into the ground for various purposes, including geotechnical investigation, mineral exploration, environmental assessment, temperature measurement, or the extraction of water, petroleum, or gases. The files in this series vary in content, containing a mix of original records and annotated photocopies, and may include reports, well/bore hole logs, well log completion reports, palynological reports, reference lists, sample logs, composite logs, analyses, correspondence, stratigraphy, diagrams, drillers’ reports, electric logging reports, lithographic reports, unpublished reports, photographs of drill core sections (rocks), maps and plans, and deep well summary sheets.  The records appear to have been created over a broad period of time and later compiled as a reference resource in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment (VA 3972) from the late 1990s.
