Standardized camera trapping data from National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) subprojects and other forest plots.

This project, Camera Trap Survey Data from National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and Other Forested Camera Trapping Data USA 2015–2022, was developed by Roland W. Kays of North Carolina State University’s Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The study includes camera trap surveys conducted between April 23, 2015, and June 4, 2022, with each subproject surveyed once for approximately one month during the local early growing season. The objective of the project is to provide readily available, standardized data for research on mammal surveying. The dataset compiles camera trap surveys from 13 NEON forested subprojects and four additional long-term forest plots across the United States. By using a common grid design and a single image-processing pipeline through Wildlife Insights, the project produces comparable mammal and avian detection records that can support continental-scale community comparisons and serve as a baseline for detecting future ecological change.
