The aim of our study was to find a practical biomarker that could be used to differentiate between stable and progressive patients with a diagnosis of systemic sclerosis. We found serum levels of chemokine 13 (CXCL-13) and B cell activating factor (BAFF) to be useful for this purpose. Both markers have been previously studied in connective tissue diseases and found to be associated with systemic involvement and progression. While the relationship of these markers with skin score in systemic sclerosis, especially, has been established, their connection with lung involvement and progression had not been determined. Our study contributes significantly to the literature in shedding light on this aspect. Despite the definition of progression in these patients according to ATS guidelines, a useful serum biomarker has not yet been identified. Our research is important in providing insights into these matters.
