LIBERIA (2010): TRAC STUDY EVALUATING CONSISTENT CONDOM USE AMONG YOUTH (15-24) IN MONROVIA AND MONTSERRADO COUNTRY. ROUND ONE

The purpose of this study is to assess the level of sexual activity, condom use, abstinence and determinants of condom use among youth aged 15-24 in Monrovia city, in order to provide evidence for the design and monitoring of PSI Liberia's HIV prevention program. The results are presented following the PSI behavior change framework focusing on the opportunity, ability, and motivation (OAM) factors associated with consistent condom use among sexually active youths in Monrovia, Liberia. The objective of adopting the OAM framework was to focus on a set of behavioral determinants that have the potential to be changed through social marketing strategies. Opportunity factors are those that influence an individual's chance to implement a promoted behavior such as availability and social norms. Ability is an individual's skills or proficiencies needed to perform a promoted behavior, which comprises factors such as, knowledge, social support, and self efficacy. Motivation, an individual's arousal or desire to perform a promoted behavior, examines factors such as attitudes, intention, and belief. This study is a cross sectional survey based on a three-stage cluster sampling strategy. Cluster sampling methodology was used to select a representative, random sample of youth aged 15-24 in Monrovia.
