Two fire broken rock fragments and an associated sediment sample were submitted for
organic residue analysis, along with three bison bone fragments for AMS radiocarbon dating,
and a single lithic tool for protein analysis from site FjPi-162, Alberta, Canada. Fourier
Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to examine organic residues from the fire
broken rock and sediment samples. Organic residue analysis was performed first on the two
fire broken rock samples to determine if they were associated with a hearth that had been used
for warming or cooking. An associated soil sample would be analyzed for organic residue,
pollen, and starch only if the fire broken rock yielded FTIR signatures representing materials
suggesting cultural use, such as food preparation.
