Anthocyanins in plants have many ecological functions and contribute to human health. Increasing attention has been paid to breeding of the anthocyanin-rich cultivars in various crops, like the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). Several purple foliage tea (PFT) cultivars have been reported, include Zijuan and Ziyan. In this project, the crossbreeding potential of Zijuan and Ziyan and the molecular mechanisms of anthocyanin hyper-accumulation in their offspring were investigated.
