The Global Subnational Census Database (SUB-TRUST Census)

The Global Subnational Population Census Database (SUB-TRUST Census) was compiled for the purpose of calculating poststratification weights used to adjust for subnationally unrepresentative survey data. The population census data were sourced from various census databases. The following statistical offices provided the underlying data: national statistics offices, Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) International and the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat) (see Table 1.2). Population counts for more than 170 countries spanning 1930 to 2024 were collected according to two demographic variables—gender and age groups (0-17, 18-29, 30-49, 50-64, and 65+)—for each subnational unit. As censuses are typically carried out decennially, we aimed to collect population data for each country at ten-year intervals. SUB-TRUST Census is fully harmonized with SUB-TRUST codes and labels.
