1. South Africa, Cape Town: District 6 19th c

Throughout the 19th century the statistically dominant ethnicity within Cape Town shifted several times but the Dutch hegemony remained consistent. The British occupation of the Cape irrefutably effected the region, but ultimately the elite Afrikaan population has had more of a lasting cultural influence. As Doreen Massey states: “the identity of places is very much bound up with the histories which are told of them, how those histories are told, and which histories turn out to be dominant” (186). At the end of the 19th century, just as the Dutch began to lose their power over the region, an authoritative Cape Dutch heritage was constructed. This identity presents the Dutch as not only the original settlers of the region, but the authentic inhabitants of the land. The presence of this dominant heritage set the stage for the 20th century forced removals in District Six.
