Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance (ZEPIM_ES)

The Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance are a set of protected coastal and marine areas that guarantee the survival of the values and biological resources of the Mediterranean; contain ecosystems typical of the Mediterranean area or habitat of endangered species of special scientific, aesthetic or cultural interest. They are declared under the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean (Barcelona, 1976). Within it is framed the Protocol on Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity of the Mediterranean (1995) which creates an international protection figure, the Specially Protected Areas of Importance for the Mediterranean (SPAMI). The geographical data come from the Autonomous Communities and Cities, the associated database is adapted to the data model established for this information in the Nature Data Bank. In May 2006 the geographical data was created and the last update due to modifications in the limits of the Island of Alboran was made in May 2010.
