1. Technical variables: nationality; number of Eurobarometer;
registration of the respondent in an electoral register; split
variable.
2. Weighting variables: sample weight, EU weight.
3. Attitude towards the EU: attitude towards unification of Western Europe;
attitude towards the EU membership of one´s country; advantages or
disadvantages of the EU membership; regret of a possible failure of the EU;
estimated and desired pace of development of the EU and the European
unification; knowledge about the EU, EU policy and EU institutions;
knowledge and importance of the present EU presidency of one´s country;
knowledge of the European Parliament and the European Commission;
attitude towards the European Parliament and the European Commission;
importance of future EU elections; preference for a national or an
European orientation of a representative in the European Parliament;
attitude towards an European government; knowledge of the European domestic
market launched in 1992; hopes as well as fears concerning the domestic
market; general attitude towards the European domestic market; trust in
European institutions; interest in European policy; interest in EU
problems and importance of these problems for the country; assessment

4. Attitude towards political and social values: life satisfaction,
happiness; personal financial situation; changes of financial situation
during the last year; estimation of change of the general economic
situation; expectation of peace or war for the coming year; expected
increase of economic conflicts (strikes); political interest, opinion
leadership; political discussions with friends; media use (TV watching,
reading of newspaper and radio listening); attitude towards a change of
society; postmaterialism; importance of religion; national pride;
satisfaction with the functioning of democracy in the country and in
Europe; political efficacy; sympathy for environmental protection
movement, anti-war movement and the feminist movement.
5. Voting behaviour: party preference; party identification; voting

6. Demography: self-assessment on a left-right continuum; party
affiliation; union membership; marital status; age at end of education;
sex; size of household; number of children less than 8 years old and
from 8 to 15 years old; occupation; branch of trade; company size; head
of household; position in household; self-assessment of social class;
degree of urbanisation; religious denomination; frequency of church
attendance; income; city size; region; mother tongue in the family.
