VPRS 11505 Student Services Files [Sample Only Retained]

Originally these files were maintained by the Special Education Unit (also known as the Special Services Division) of the Education Department (VA 714). The Special Education Unit existed from c.1950 to 1988.In 1988 the function was devolved to the various regions which set up individual units under their jurisdiction. These units were known as School Support Centres. In 1993 the school support function was privatised. As a result of this all subsequent files were retained by the body.The records document the treatment and education of children with disabilities, behavioural problems, general health problems and learning difficulties.The specific content of files varies significantly from file to file and can include behavioural reports, psychologists reports, medical reports, school progress reports, special needs reports and teacher reports.Construction of SampleUnder the provisions of the General Disposal Schedule for School Records PROS 88/2 only a sample of these files is to be retained permanently.The method of sampling used was to retain all the files pertaining to students whose surnames began with the letter P. The sample was chosen to reflect the different problems encountered by the units, the students varying ethnic and social backgrounds and any changes to practice that may occur over time.
