本数据集源自为纪念荷兰科学研究组织（NWO, Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research）成立五十周年而开展的社会调查，核心调研内容包括：科学及其科研成果在社会中的重要性；受访者收听、收看科学类广播电视节目的频率，阅读期刊与杂志中科学相关内容的频率，通过互联网搜集科学信息的行为，对更多科学信息的需求；受访者对科学感兴趣的动因及最核心动因，科学信息的可信度，大众对科学的整体认知，对技术创新落地应用的看法，科学知识在日常生活中的重要性，科研成果对政府政策制定的重要性，以及对政府应资助的三大重点科研领域的观点。本次调查的背景变量涵盖：基础人口特征、居住状况、家庭特征、职业与就业情况、收入与金融资产、教育程度、社会阶层、宗教信仰、阅读习惯、大众媒体接触情况及文化接触经历。
