The microbial community composition of dolphins and sea lions was characterized using a 16S rRNA gene-based survey of oral, gastric, rectal, and respiratory samples. Follow-up studies used genome-resolved metagenomics, microscopy, and other techniques, to characterize novel microbial and functional diversity present in the dolphin mouth.
