Viewing copy available on-site only. Abstract: (Critical) This program presents the normal swallowing mechanism and the innervation of the pharynx through the use of cine radiologic techniques. The mechanism of achalasia of the cricopharyngeus muscle is reviewed. The failure of relaxation as well as delayed relation of the cricopharyngeus is demonstrated. The barium swallow is used to show the differential diagnosis of this entity from tumors, venous plexuses and normal relaxation. A comparison of achalasia to webbs of the esophagus and relationships to diseases are also considered. The material is well organized and logically planned, creating a lucid discussion of a difficult clinical problem.
