Assessment Of Dental Anxiety Among Patients Reporting To Dental Operatory- A Cross-Sectional Survey

The fear of going to the dentist, commonly referred to as dental anxiety in the population, affects roughly 36% of the people, with another 12% experiencing severe dental anxiety. The emotional state of the patient affects the overall outcome of the treatment in the dental clinic. The study assesses the prevalence and characteristics of dental anxiety in patients reporting to the dental operatory which stands the major aim. Questionnaire-based survey was carried out with 100 participants (50 were males and 50 were females) reporting to the institute for dental treatment. The modified dental anxiety scale was used to evaluate the level of dental anxiety among the various participants. The results were noted as 90% of the patients were in a high fear group, of which 48% were females and 42% were males. A significant difference was seen by using an independent t-test in the mean total score in female and male groups (P Dental fear significantly correlates with the most common dental procedures. This study would help the practicing dentist to identify the patient with dental anxiety to provide primary care through psychological evaluation, support, and therapy which in turn will improve the overall treatment plan and prognosis for the patient.
