How Tree Size Affects Distance of Sappling

Measurments were preformed on September 22nd, at 4:00pm in the Danby Woodlot at York University. The belt method was used in this research experiment, from the center of the woodlot a transect was walked outwards for 100 feet, maple tree were selected within 50 feet of both sides of the line. Diameter was estimated by holding up a measuring tape horizontal to the tree and eyeing it. Canopy coverage was also estimated by standing at the base of the tree and looking up through a box made from our index fingers and thumbs touching. Experiment was conducted to determine if the larger the tree, the more access to light it has, and therefore inhibts the growth of other trees of the sae species within a certain distance due to competition.
