Lower precipitation frequency often increase soil inorganic nitrogen (N) losses from water-limited grasslands. However, the magnitude and mechanisms of these losses remain poorly understood, especially across grassland degradation states, potentially constraining grassland recovery. We tested the effects of two-year experimental moderate and extreme decreases in precipitation frequency across a Leymus chinensis grassland degradation gradient on N loss and the key biogeochemical pathways potentially involved.
