Simulation-based Education for Healthcare Workers in the Pacific Islands: Optimising Programme Implementation and Evaluation

Simulation-based education is used to train healthcare workers while optimising patient safety. The Pacific Islands, which face significant workforce challenges, are likely to benefit from upscaling this form of training. This research programme focused on understanding and optimising the implementation of simulation-based education in the Pacific Islands using surveys, interviews and clinical data collection. It included the design and delivery of a novel simulation programme targeting acute paediatric care at a hospital in Papua New Guinea. Findings suggest simulation can be successfully implemented in the Pacific Islands by addressing contextual barriers and leveraging the strengths of Pacific Island healthcare workers.
