Azide-tagged copper­(I) complexes of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) analogous to the well-known bis­[2,6-diisopropylphenyl]­imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr) and bis­[2,6-diisopropylphenyl]­imidazolin-2-ylidene (SIPr) were synthesized and characterized. These complexes were able to act as catalyst and substrate in a model copper-catalyzed azide–alkyne (CuAAC) reaction with propargyl alcohol, yielding functionalized copper­(I)-NHC complexes.
