Establishing the incommensurate magnetism in single crystals of Cr1/3TaS2

Noncentrosymmetric systems lack a centre of inversion, which can lead to interesting magnetic phenomena. Cr1/3TaS2, a chiral helimagnet which has been shown to host a chiral soliton lattice, i.e., 360 degree domain walls separated by regions of ferromagnetism, in an external field. However, an incommensurate chiral helimagnetic state has yet to be confirmed with neutron diffraction. In our previous proposal, neutron diffraction measurements on Cr1/3TaS2 indicate an incommensurate phase is present, which could be the fingerprint of chiral ordering. Due to the limited time, small sample size and small moment of Cr1/3TaS2 we could not get the required statistics necessary to fully resolve the incommensurate magnetism. Here we propose a continuation experiment to use single crystal diffraction measurements of Cr1/3TaS2, as well as the high resolution possible for WISH time of flight measurements, to more fully resolve the incommensurate magnetism in this system.
