Gut microbe-generated metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide and risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm: a cohort study

In community-based older adults, higher circulating levels of the gut microbe-derived metabolite TMAO were independently associated with increased risk for AAA development and adverse AAA events including AAA surgical repair, AAA rupture, or AAA-related death. These findings support TMAO as a novel risk factor for AAA and adverse aortic outcomes and are consistent with the potential targeting of TMAO levels as treatment for AAA prevention.
