Removing grazing is a main method for restoring degraded soda-saline grasslands in Songnen Plain. This study analyzed the effects of natural vegetation restoration on soil properties and microbial communities, and found that Leymus chinensis is recommended for restoration and carbon sequestration. Soil salinity was highest in bare land and lowest in reed vegetation. Soil organic matter content and SOC were higher in vegetated soils. Bacterial and fungal communities varied between restoration types, with pH being the main cause of microbial differences. The difference in soil organic matter composition and content was mainly due to pH, and reducing soil pH is a key step for future restoration efforts.
